Holy Cross names Chesney football coach

(STATS) – After leading Assumption to the best five-year stretch in program history, Bob Chesney will try to deliver similar success as Holy Cross’ new coach.

Chesney, who became the school’s 28th coach on Thursday, is charged with lifting a program that has posted only one winning season in the last six years.

“Bob is a rising star in the coaching profession, and his track record of head coaching success at multiple programs speaks for itself,” Holy Cross athletic director Nathan Pine said. “He is a familiar face within the Worcester community already, and we know he will be a great fit for our culture and vision at Holy Cross.”

Chesney, a 2000 graduate of Dickinson College, has a 67-25 (.728) record as a college coach. He went 44-16 in five seasons at Assumption, leading the Greyhounds to two Northeast-10 Conference titles in the last three years and three straight NCAA Division II playoff appearances. Having guided them to an 11-2 season this year, he was named the NE-10 coach of the year for the second time.

He also was 23-9 as the head coach at Division III Salve Regina from 2010-12.

Offensive coordinator Brian Rock had served as Holy Cross’ interim coach after Tom Gilmore was fired during his 14th season on Oct. 15. The Crusaders finished 4-7 overall and 3-3 in the Patriot League.
