Arsenal and Manchester City are planning to make a move for Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski, according to reports.

The 25-year-old has been one of Sean Dyche’s standout players in defence, which has been a cornerstone in Burnley’s impressive season so far.

The Times claims that Burnley will not entertain offers for Tarkowski in January but could look to sell the defender at the end of the season.

Both City and Arsenal are looking to bolster their homegrown quota with a new defender and are considering bids next summer.

Arsenal are in the market for a new central defender as Per Mertesacker will retire at the end of the season.

According to reports in France this week, Arsenal have held initial talks with Mainz over a deal for their 21-year-old central defender Abdou Diallo

City, meanwhile, are looking at cover in central defence with more urgency.

Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk is top of Pep Guardiola’s shortlist for the January window, but the Premier League leaders are also monitoring Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez.
