JEDDAH: One hundred divers managed to collect 1,673 kilograms of waste along the beachfront of north and south Jeddah on Sunday.

Under the slogan “Well take care of the waters while you handle the surface,” the divers volunteered to clean the sea as part of the six-month National Environmental Awareness and Sustainable Development Programme (NEASDP), which was launched earlier this year by Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishal bin Majid.

The NEASDP targets all Jeddah citizens and visitors and addresses all environmental issues through wide-ranging strategies that include waste management, recycling, the conservation of marine, coastal, and terrestrial areas, green buildings, the preservation of public property, environmental citizenship, and energy and water conservation.

The program also addresses issues such as climate change, environmental pollution, environmental health and safety, wildlife, and biodiversity.

In the short term, the program aims to raise the locals environmental awareness and develop sustainable, environment-friendly behaviors.

In the long run, it aims to reinforce environment-friendly behaviors, shed light on environmental issues and sustainable development, and introduce a new sustainable mechanism for sustainable environmental education programs to achieve a high level of environmental public awareness that ensures the protection of the Saudi environment in a manner that contributes to attaining Vision 2030.
