Vikas Dubey arrested in Ujjain: 10 things to know about the gangster

The kingpin of Kanpur encounter gangster Vikas Dubey was on Thursday arrested by police from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Vikas Dubey was going to Ujjain Mahakal temple when he was identified by security personnel. Police were informed, he confessed his identity after being pushed for it. He has been apprehended by police and interrogation is underway, Ujjain collector Ashish Singh was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

> Vikas Dubey was born in the village Bikaru, Chaubepur block, Kanpur Dehat Uttar Pradesh. His exact date of birth and year is still unknown. However, he is reported to be about 40-50 years old.
> Dubey reportedly committed his first crime at the age of 17 in his hometown of Kanpur but ran away from the village for some years. Even his relatives had no idea about his whereabouts for at least five years.
> The first criminal case against him was registered in the 1991, and by 2020 he had over 60 criminal cases against his name involving murder, extortion and land grabbing.
> Vikas Dubey's first wife died under mysterious circumstances in his home
> Vikas Dubey second wife Richa Dubey took the membership of Samajwadi Party in the year 2015. According to sources, Samajwadi Party's Kanpur Rural Unit President Mahendra Singh Yadav, the then MLA Munindra Shukla and Minister Aruna Kori were involved in securing the SP membership
> TOI had reported in 2001 that BJP MoS Santosh Shukla was stopped by Vikas and seven of his henchmen, armed with rifles, country-made pistols and iron rods. Shukla got out of his vehicle, tried to reason with them but was hit with an iron rod instead. He ran into the Shivli police station but Vikas chased him, all the way inside and shot him dead in the presence of 10 cops. Vikas left the state, “surrendered” later but then was released on bail. The motive was said to be political.
> Jai Bajpai, the treasurer of Vikas Dubey, is also reported to have close contacts with officials in the Kanpur area. He is reported to be involved in illegally occupying disputed land and houses.
