Former NASCAR driver Richard Childress is crediting God and his firearm, for helping to save the lives of his family after criminals broke into his North Carolina home, last week.

Childress, 72, said that he and his wife were in an upstairs bedroom on December 17 when three men broke into their home. The former NASCAR diver said he grabbed his gun and took a few quick shots at the invaders who then immediately fled.

It didn’t appear that any of the intruders were hit by the homeowner’s potshots.

Davidson County Sheriff David Grice said that Childress’ actions were justified under the state’s Castle Doctrine laws. Sheriff Grice also said that Childress told him, “the only reason he and his wife were here today was because of God and the Second Amendment.”

Childress, a one-time member of the NRA Board of Directors, is offering a $10K reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the men who broke into the home.

As a team owner with Dale Earnhardt, Childress won six Cup Series championships and was elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2017.
