Elaine May, Lucas Hedges & Michael Cera To Star In Broadway Premiere Of Kenneth Lonergans The Waverly Gallery

Elaine May, Lucas Hedges and Michael Cera have been cast in Scott Rudins production of Kenneth Lonergans The Waverly Gallery, a 2001 Pulitzer Prize finalist set for its Broadway premiere next season, Rudin announced today.

Directed by Obie Award winner Lila Neugebauer, in her Broadway debut, The Waverly Gallery will begin previews at the John Golden Theatre on Tuesday, Sept. 25, with an official opening on Thursday, Oct. 25.

This production reunites both Lonergan and Rudin (who produced the play This Is Our Youth and the film Margaret), and Lonergan and Cera (whose other two Lonergan collaborations includes the current Broadway production of Lobby Hero).

The production also will mark a homecoming of sorts for May, whose landmark An Evening With Mike Nichols and Elaine May played at the John Golden.

The Waverly Gallery creative team will include David Zinn (Scenic Design), Ann Roth (Costume Design), and Brian MacDevitt (Lighting Design).

The Waverly Gallery made its premiere in 1999 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival before opening Off-Broadway at the Promenade Theater the following year. The new team describes it as a “about the final years of a generous, chatty, and feisty grandmothers final battle against Alzheimers disease. Gladys (May) is an old-school lefty and social activist and longtime owner of a small art gallery in Greenwich Village. The play explores her fight to retain her independence and the subsequent effect of her decline on her family, especially her grandson. More than a memory play, The Waverly Gallery captures the humor and strength of a family in the face of crisis.”

Additional casting and production details will be announced shortly.
