Royal Mint marks Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding with coin release

Brits may not be getting a bank holiday for this year's royal wedding, but that hasn't stopped the Royal Mint from designing a special coin to "commemorate the momentous occasion".

The £5 coin will be available from 1 May in three versions to mark Prince Harry's marriage to Meghan Markle on 19 May at Windsor Castle.

An uncirculated version will cost £13, a silver proof coin will be on sale for £82.50 and gold proof version will set you back £1,980.

The soon-to-be royal couple granted Royal Mint designer Jody Clark a special sitting to create the coin.

The 1,000-year-old coin maker revealed the sitting was "relaxed and informal". The pair can be seen looking lovingly into each others eyes and highlights the easy familiarity and connection between the royal duo, the Royal Mint said.

The coin release comes after the BBC waived the TV licence fee for special screenings and street parties celebrating the royal wedding.

Royal Mint chief executive Anne Jessopp said: "It has been an honour for The Royal Mint to work closely with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to create the authentic Royal Wedding coin celebrating this most British of celebrations.

I have been in post as CEO of The Royal Mint for just a couple of months, and already the Royal Mint has celebrated the birth of His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge, and now a Royal Wedding, so its a very exciting year for the Royal Mint in terms of royal moments.
