JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia has topped donor states to the 2018 UN Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan (UNYHRP) by donating $530.4 million out of a total of $1.54 billion, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a report.
Saudi Arabia has also topped donor states outside the UNYHRP 2018 by providing $196 million out of $466.4 million.
This plan is the largest distress call by humanitarian organizations to alleviate the suffering in Yemen.
The strategic objectives of the YHRP are: Saving lives, protecting civilians, enhancing equitable aid distribution, guaranteeing the flexibility and durability of humanitarian work and its support to the sustainable recovery.
As a response to this distress call, a royal decree to establish the Yemen Comprehensive Humanitarian Operations (YCHO) Support Center was issued, where national capacities work tirelessly to provide logistic operational support and coordination to facilitate the delivery of aid provided by INGOs and NGOs in Yemen alike.
YCHO objectives are to improve the Yemeni humanitarian situation by addressing immediate aid shortfalls while simultaneously building capacity for long-term improvement of humanitarian aid and commercial goods imports to Yemen.
Saudi Arabia directly deposited $2 billion in the Yemeni Central Bank to promote economic stabilization and improve the Yemeni peoples quality of life. This is in addition to a $1 billion deposit that Saudi Arabia contributed in 2014.
On March 28, Saudi Arabia and the UAE gave $930 million to UN humanitarian efforts in Yemen.
The Arab worlds poorest country is in the grip of a stalemate war and what the UN calls the worlds worst humanitarian crisis, with 22 million people needing aid.
There are some two million Yemenis working in the Kingdom and they send more than $10 million to their families in Yemen.
