Kalash people celebrate as one of their own is nominated for Provincial Assembly

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf become the only party of winning the election for the second consecutive time in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Peshawar: The Kalash people in Rumbur valley on Saturday celebrated the victory of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in the general elections which has paved the way for selection of their own native young men — Wazirzada — as a member of the Provincial Assembly (PA) on minority reserved seats.

He has already been nominated by the party.

A prominent social worker, Wazirzada was nominated for one of the two minority seats and will certainly be the first from Kalash tribe to be part of the Provincial Assembly (PA) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after his party, the PTI, made history by winning a record majority and becoming the only party to win the election for a second consecutive time in the province.

The name of Wazirzada stood second on the priority list submitted to the election commission while his party had got the required strength of general seats to grab the two minority seats to make him the first Kalash to become an MPA.

People from the other two valleys of Bumburate and Birir thronged the valley to participate in the celebrations which were expected continue for three days.

The appointment is an achievement for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, one Dr Tariq Mohammad Adnan told journalists, saying he had came from aboard with his family to cast his vote in favour of PTI.

“It is a significant day for the Kalash people as one of their own has been nominated by a political party for the Assembly seat,” he added.

He said fellow villagers had slaughtered dozens of goats to feed the guests along with the customary items, including cheese, honey and bread.

The ceremony was also attended by nominated candidate for National Assembly Abdul Latif and Wazirzada and presented special Chitrali cap by the elders of the Kalasha tribe.

A Christian girl Najma, who recently passed her MSc in Botany, said the nomination of people from the Kalash tribes to the National and Provincial Assembly seats, would address the marginalisation of people residing in the Chitral District.

“We speak Kalash language, from the Dardic family of the Indo-Aryan branch,” she added.

Najma said the PTIs victory was unprecedented, and she is sure the problem being faced by the people of Kalash and other parts of District Chitral, which had been neglected in the past, would be addressed on priority basis.
