Homeless man arrested for murder of Saudi student in Florida apartment

US police have arrested a 28-year-old homeless man over the murder of a Saudi student who was found killed in his apartment in Miami, Florida earlier this month.

Police said that 23-year-old Yaser Abu al-Faraj was studying engineering at the University of Miami and that traces of assault were found on his body.

The suspect, identified as Robert Wayne Gore, was charged with first-degree murder and is currently under investigation, the police said.

The suspect appears to have a lengthy past criminal record and was involved in several other cases, including assault and the possession of drugs.

Gore, who said he had no previous relationship to the victim, was arrested at a gas station and confessed to stabbing the student multiple times in an attempt to rob him.

Al-Faraj was found dead in his apartment by his roommate on Oc. 7 who reported the incident to the police.

Miami-Dade County police determined the suspects identity through surveillance cameras, and released his photograph with an announcement that a reward would be given to anyone who came forward with information that could help in the investigation.

University of Miami students and staff held a vigil for the Saudi student, cancelling classes to pay homage to the young and promising student.

The Saudi embassy was informed about the unfortunate incident and said it would follow the investigation while providing all needed support to the family of the student.
