MUMBAI: The long-delayed portfolios in the three-party Maharashtra government were finalised on Saturday evening with NCP succeeding in securing the home department from Shiv Sena, to whom it had been allocated earlier. CM Uddhav Thackeray submitted the list of portfolios to governor B S Koshyari for approval in the evening.
Ahead of the formal announcement, which is likely to be made on Sunday, indications were that given the list, Nagpur-based NCP leader Anil Deshmukh would be the home minister, while the CM would keep the general administration department and law and judiciary to himself. First-time MLA Aaditya Thackeray is slated to get environment, sports and tourism, while deputy CM Ajit Pawar would get finance and planning, Congresss Balasaheb Thorat revenue and ex-CM Ashok Chavan the public works department. Senas Eknath Shinde would keep the urban development portfolio.
Before submitting the list, the CM had a meeting with Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Thorat, NCPs Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil and Senas Eknath Shinde and Subhash Desai.
From among the other NCP ministers, Jayant Patil is set to get the crucial water resources portfolio, while high-profile leader Chhagan Bhujbal would have to make do with the relatively insignificant food and civil supplies department. Dilip Walse Patil, who wanted the home department, would likely get excise and labour, Mumbai NCP president Nawab Malik would get skill development and minority welfare and Hasan Mushriff would be given the rural development department.
Thanes Jeetendra Awhad is likely to get housing, while Dhananjay Munde, who defeated his cousin Pankaja, will mostly get social justice. Balasaheb Patil may get cooperation and marketing, Rajendra Shingne food and drug administration and public heath is likely to be allotted to Rajesh Tope. Among NCPs ministers of state, Aditi Tatkare is to be picked for the industries, tourism and sports portfolios, Shamburaj Desai for home (rural), Rajendra Yedrawkar for FDA, public heath and culture and Sanjay Bansode for PWD, environment and water supply.
On the Sena list, Subhash Desai is set to get industries, which he had in the earlier government too, Anil Parab is likely to get transport and parliamentary affairs, Shankarrao Gadakh may be entrusted with water conservation, Sandipan Bhumare with employment guarantee scheme and Sanjay Rathod with forests.
