Day 32 of coronavirus lockdown: Ground report from Indian cities

NEW DELHI: Even as the Union government on Saturday announced relaxation in the closure of shops across the country, several cities continued to grapple with the rising number of coronavirus cases. In Mumbai, the civic body is trying to prevent the community outbreak in Dharavi, while in Ahmedabad, the city added 169 new cases in the last 24 hours.

Here is a look at the latest updates on the outbreak of coronavirus from major Indian cities —

Mumbai

  • On Thursday evening, several residents of an upscale housing complex in Pali Hill, Bandra, were at loggerheads over rules to be followed for delivery agents and other service personnel during the lockdown. Such fights have become common in societies across the city.
  • Thirty per cent of the Covid-19 cases in Mumbai are from three civic wards with Worli, Byculla and Kurla as their hot spots.
  • The BMC has found that most of Dharavis Covid-19 cases are from five high-risk zones (see graphic). Of the five, Kalyanwadi has recorded two deaths of coronavirus patients and Social Nagar and Muslim Nagar one death each.
  • The daily tally of cases in both Mumbai and Maharashtra hit a surprising 50% drop on Friday—a day after registering the highest single-day tally. The state recorded 394 cases, against 778 on Thursday. Mumbai reported 242 cases on Friday, 53% fewer than 522 on Thursday.

Delhi

  • Delhi governments decision to unseal the containment zone of Mansara Apartments in east Delhis Vasundhara Enclave has come as a ray of hope for thousands of people currently locked down in their houses while the number of Covid victims has steadily risen in the one month of the lockdown in the capital.
  • People offered 'namaz' and performed 'sehari' rituals at their homes as all mosques remain closed amid coronavirus lockdown.
  • Delhi government will soon seek permission from the Centre to use the plasma therapy on all serious novel coronavirus patients as four such patients at the Lok Nayak hospital have shown “encouraging results” to this treatment and two of them are likely to be discharged soon.
  • Delhi high court on Friday sought response from the Centre and the AAP government on a plea that no centrally air-conditioned building, including courts, be used without precaution to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
  • Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday appealed to the recovered Covid-19 patients to donate their plasma to save others.

Lucknow

  • Chief minister Yogi Aditynath announced here on Friday that his government would bring back labourers who hailed from UP but were in quarantine at present in other states.
  • As many as 19 more people were found positive for novel coronavirus infection in Lucknow on Friday. This includes seven contacts including the wife of the cable operator found positive on Thursday in Naka.
  • Intensifying the governments intervention in coronavirus sensitive areas, chief minister Yogi Adityanath has deputed 54 senior officers to spend at least a week in 18 districts where there are 20 or more Covid-19 cases and assess how the lockdown is being implemented.
  • The UP government on Friday fixed the price of alcohol used in the production of sanitizers in the wake of new coronavirus pandemic.

Bengaluru

  • Minister for health and family welfare B Sriramulu and medical education minister K Sudhakar initiated phase 1 of clinical trials to use Convalescent Plasma Therapy for severe Covid patients, at BMC Victoria hospital in Bengaluru.
  • Central Crime Branch police arrested two persons delivering cigarettes at the doorstep of customers and seized 450 packets of branded ones.
  • The cluster outbreak in Hongasandra, southeast Bengaluru, is growing. Until Friday night, 20 of the 153 primary contacts and 30 secondary contacts of a 54-year-old migrant labourer from Bihar, who tested positive on Wednesday, have been infected.

Hyderabad

  • Two Hyderabad techies who are volunteering with Society for Cyberabad Security Council and three other youngsters distributed grocery kits to the Chenchu tribe in Amrabad forest area of Nagarkurnool district.
  • Moved by the plight of stranded migrant workers during the lockdown, a city-based techie and his friends have been coordinating with the administration to provide food packets to them.
  • Worried health authorities in Telangana are trying to trace dozens of possible Covid-19 suspects roaming the streets after two asymptomatic persons from Kulsumpura in the city tested positive for novel coronavirus.
  • Despite a government order deferring rent collection for three months, many people staying in hostels and paying guest (PG) accommodations are stressed over house owners forcing them to pay rent for March and April.

Kolkata

  • Local police, elected representatives and the association of traders have decided to keep Raja Katra market shut indefinitely to prevent any further transmission of the virus.
  • Areas around Phalpatty, Jorasanko, Amherst Street, Narkeldanga, Entally, Belgachhia, Karaya and Topsia have been identified as zones requiring greater CCTV surveillance. Besides deploying combat forces, Lalbazar has drawn up a schedule for using drones.
  • A senior member of the legal fraternity admitted to Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata for spinal surgery has tested positive for Covid-19. At the same hospital, a senior administrative official, who is also a doctor, and the security in-charge have also been found to be affected.
