NEW DELHI: On the heels of their day-long nationwide protest on Friday against “draconian changes” in labour laws by some states, several central trade unions (CTUs) petitioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding an immediate relief to stranded migrant workers and their safe passage home, payment of wages to all during the lockdown period, and cash transfer of Rs 7500 to all non-income tax paying households, including the unorganised labour force, for three months.
The joint petition, which followed demonstrations and hunger strikes across the country including in cyclone-hit West Bengal and Odisha, urged the PM to withdraw freeze on daily allowance to central government employees and order a complete halt on changes or dilution in labour laws.
The CTUs, which had earlier registered their complaint against the dilution of labour laws to International Labour Organisation (ILO), also found support for their protests from the World Federation of Trade Unions and International Trade Union Confederation. “Both international labour Unions have extended their support to the CTUs in their protests against the arbitrary dilution of labour laws by India.
