No proof MMR vaccination offers protection against Covid-19, says Serum Institute

PUNE: Pune-based vaccine major Serum Institute of India (SII) said there is no direct evidence to prove that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine offers protection against Covid-19.
The SII is one of the key manufacturers of the MMR vaccine in the country.
The institutes statement to TOI on Sunday comes amidst nationwide reports of adults queuing up for MMR vaccination in hopes of a defence against the coronavirus. The MMR is administered to infants at nine months of age.
Before the interest in MMR, there were theories on the supposed protection offered by the anti-TB BCG vaccine.
Multiple clinical trials are on to investigate the BCG-Covid connection, including a multi-centric trial in Maharashtra, where the SIIs recombinant BCG vaccine is being assessed as a preventive treatment for Covid-19.
