Positivity rate hits 10% for 1st time

NEW DELHI: Indias Covid-19 load has reached a worrisome stage where even enhanced daily countrywide testing of 3.27 lakh is proving to be inadequate with the positivity rate — total confirmed cases per 100 tests — reaching the double digit mark for the first time at 10% in the last two weeks, between July 2 and 15. India has so far carried out 1.27 crore tests with 9.7 lakh confirmed cases.
The nationwide positivity rate was 5% between May 7-21 and 8.6% in the previous fortnight (June 19-July 2). A 14-day study of positivity rate gives a steady view whether the outbreak has been effectively controlled or has gained momentum. Any figure above 5% is worrisome and indicates that only serious patients are being tested.
A TOI study showed Maharashtra was on the top with a positivity rate of 23%, followed by Telangana at 19%, Delhi at 15% and Karnataka at 12% in the July 2-15 period. Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal crossed the 10% mark while Odisha and Bihar breached 9%.
India was set to cross the 1 million mark in total cases on Thursday, behind the US with 3.6 million cases and Brazil with 1.9 million. India has recorded 25,000 deaths while it has been over 1.4 lakh in the US and 76,000 in Brazil. Only the UK, Mexico, Italy, France and Spain have reported more deaths than India though with a lesser number of cases.
Delhi has been constantly showing a declining trend but is still in the red zone with its positivity rate coming down from a high of 30% duRead More – Source
