NEW DELHI: Goa has planned to become 100% Har Ghar Jal state with linking every rural household with a tap connection for drinking water supply by 2021 — three years ahead of the national target.
Three other states/UT which will achieve this target next year include Bihar, Telangana and Puducherry under the ongoing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) which aims to provide safe drinking water in adequate quantity (55 litres per person per day) to every rural household through tap connections in the country by 2024.
Goas progress under the JJM was reviewed on Thursday in a joint virtual meeting of Union Jal Shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and state chief minister Pramod Sawant where the latter is learnt to have claimed to be on track to meet the target next year.
Under the Mission, every source of water needs to be tested once for chemical parameters and twice for bacteriological contamination (pre and post monsoon) in a year as a part of water quality monitoring.
All the states and UTs have been asked to open water quality laboratory facilities to the general public, so that villagers, mainly women, can come and test the quality of water supplied to their household.
As far as Goa is concerned, 2.29 lakh rural households out of 2.6 lakh rural households have already got tap connections. The remaining ones will get the connections by next year.
As per plans of states and UTs, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Meghalaya, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Sikkim will achieve their respective targets by 2022 while Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Chhattisgarh will become 100% Har Ghar Jal states by 2023.
Remaining states such as Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and West Bengal are expected to do it by 2024.
Under the Mission, India has provided over 2 crore new tap connections to rural households in the past one year since launch of this Read More – Source
