Assam govt remains firm on sample re-verification of nationality claims

GUWAHATI: Assam government on Monday informed the assembly that it remains firm on sample re-verification of the nationality claims made by some of the people included in the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which has been lying in cold storage for exactly one year now since it was published.
The state governments plea for the re-verification is lying pending in Supreme Court for more than a year now and the apex court is yet to stamp its approval on the citizenship document which was updated under its monitoring. The document has also not got the approval of the Registrar General of India, which undertook this mega exercise over a period of six years.
“The state government had filed an affidavit before the Honourable Supreme Court in July, 2019 seeking direction for 20 % sample re-verification of names included in the final draft NRC in the districts of Assam bordering Bangladesh and a 10 % sample re-verification of names included in the final draft NRC in the remaining districts. The State Government continues to remain strongly in favour of re-verification,” parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary told the house in a written reply
Patowary pointed out at that there was no time frame for closing the entire process of updating the NRC. “No specific time frame for completion of the whole process has been fixed as on date,” he said.
