Smith made 141 last week at the Gabba and appeared set for another extended stay at the crease after nullifying the bowling and verbals from James Anderson and Stuart Broad.
But the Aussie skipper fell for 40 as he played on an innocuous delivery from 23-year-old Overton.

Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, former England spinner Phil Tufnell said: ‘It was a little bit of a cutter from Overton. It almost spun.
‘Steve Smith is out. I repeat. Steve Smith is out.
‘Now England have to really push. This is their chance to get back into this Ashes series.’
