To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the European Championships, the UEFA Euro 2020 competition be hosted across 12 different cities.
Why Jose Mourinho cannot replace Paul Pogba against Manchester City
Similarly to Euro 2016, the tournament will include 24 teams as opposed to 16 teams, seen in previous tournaments.
This will give the opportunity for smaller countries to qualify once again.
Some fans opposed to the tournament being expanded to 24 teams in 2016, however UEFA will point to Wales’ tremendous performances, which saw them reach the semi-finals.
UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino said the inclusion of more teams was another reason why the tournament will be held across Europe.
He said: ‘2020 is the 60th anniversary of the European Championship. Obviously the fact the EURO will feature 24 teams instead of 16 puts an additional burden on countries to host such an event. It becomes much more difficult for many countries – the requirements are becoming bigger and bigger.’
How long will travel times be?
UEFA stated that they have taken into consideration the travelling time for fans.
UEFA explained: ‘Travel distances will be factored in when assigning hosting teams to tournament groups – and where feasible, flights will not exceed two hours’ duration between host cities.’
How many games will Wembley be hosting in Euro 2020?
Wembley will now host seven games at Euro 2020, the most of any European country.
This is because Brussels lost the right to host matches for the tournament.
Belgium’s capital city has been ruled out as a planned new stadium is still to be built and UEFA have not received the necessary guarantees.
Wembley was already scheduled to hold the semi-finals and final but in addition, will now also host three group games and a last 16 tie.
UEFA said the decision taken by the UEFA Executive Committee means England can prepare to stage a third major footballing championship after the 1966 FIFA World Cup and EURO ’96.
