Pep Guardiola has admitted Manchester City cannot rely on Vincent Kompany to remain fit after the centre-back went off during the win over Manchester United.

The last 18 months have been an injury hell for Kompany who has struggled to stay match fit for a sustained period of time.

Kompany returned to full fitness at the end of November, but was substituted after an hour against Manchester United on Sunday.

‘Vinny is always like this and we cannot count on him for a long time.’

City are already without John Stones at the back and with Kompany facing another spell on the sidelines it could mean a defensive crisis for the Premier League leaders.

Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala would be the only two fit senior centre-backs with a hectic Christmas schedule already underway.

City need to perform over Christmas to maintain their iron grip at the top of the table.

Eleven points separate them and second-place United, but Guardiola’s team cannot afford to take their foot off the gas pedal just yet.

A defensive injury crisis could prove costly for City who are so far unbeaten in the league this season.

City set a new winning-streak record in the English top flight by claiming their 14th league victory in a row.
