Pep Guardiola had an interesting response when asked whether he had ever masterminded a more dominant performance over a Manchester United team than Manchester City’s 2-1 win at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The City boss claimed Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over the Red Devils in the 2011 Champions League final was among his finest displays as a manager at the top.
While David Silva and Nicolas Otamendi were City’s heroes this weekend, Pedro, Lionel Messi and David Villa were Barca’s goalscorers in their Wembley showdown with United back in 2010/11.
Asked whether he had ever dominated a United team like his team did on Sunday, Guardiola replied: ‘Yeah, in the final of the Champions League in London.
‘The first 20 to 25 minutes in that game was the best performance I have had as a manager.
Guardiola heaped praise on Nicolas Otamendi, Vincent Kompany and Eliaquim Mangala in the aftermath of City’s victory at Old Trafford.
We know United are really good on the counter-attack because Lingard, Rashford, Martial, Lukaku – they are so strong.
When you defend in your box, with the long balls, they are stronger. But today I think Nicolas Otamendi, Vincent [Kompany] and [Eliaquim] Mangala in the last three minutes were outstanding.
‘It’s not easy to come in in that situation. They were so aggressive.’
