Jose Mourinho sprung a surprise in his Manchester United team selection to play Bournemouth by naming Scott McTominay among the starting XI.

It represents just the second Premier League start for the youngster, whose only previous start was in the meaningless 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on the final day of last season.

The 21-year-old Scottish midfielder came in for Ander Herrera, who was named on the bench for the game at Old Trafford.

Mourinho explained ahead of kick-off that he has confidence in McTominay.

‘He is ready. He played in Champions League and League Cup against Swansea which is like a Premier League match.

‘He’s been training with us all season. He’s been on the bench six, seven, eight, nine matches in a row getting experience and knowledge of the game. I think he’s ready.’

With so little game time to his name, McTominay is best known for an incredible growth spurt.

At the start of 2015 he was only 5ft 6ins but he now stands at 6ft 4ins.

Reserves coach Warren Joyce has said of him: ‘He’s a really good footballer, technically sound with good skills and excellent in the keep-ball sessions.’
