Arsenal’s season is not going to plan. Their away form is dreadful, they can’t put a decent run together and they find themselves seventh in the Premier League.

The latest set-back was a 0-0 draw with West Ham on Wednesday evening.

There is a debate raging about what is to blame – has Arsene Wenger’s reign run its course? Are the contract situations surrounding Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil proving a distraction? Is it the Gunners’ incredible ability to make daft defensive errors on a consistent basis?

All of those are arguably contributing factors.

But Premier League statistics reveal Arsenal have a very obvious problem this season – converting chances.

Following the latest round of fixtures, Arsenal have created 230 opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net – which is more than any other team – including table-toppers Manchester City.

Despite that, they’ve only scored 30 goals which is fewer than Man City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and level with Tottenham.

Chances created this season

Arsenal – 230
Man City – 228
Liverpool – 225
Tottenham – 224
Chelsea – 196
Man Utd – 159
Watford – 148
Everton – 125
Leicester – 123
Burnley – 121

Their failures in front of goal come despite having an impressive array of talent in attack. With the summer signing of Alexandre Lacazette for £46.5million and the highly rated Ozil and Sanchez, top talents have struggled for a place in the side. Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck, Alex Iwobi and Theo Walcott can’t be guaranteed a start.

Most chances created

Kevin De Bruyne – 50
Cesc Fàbregas – 47
Mesut Özil – 46
Alexis Sánchez – 40
David Silva – 37
