Gianluigi Donnarumma’s future is again the subject of intense speculation and it could have far-reaching consequences.

The AC Milan youngster is considered among the best goalkeepers in the world, despite being just 18. But it appears he could be forced out of his current club.

A new batch of rumours has seen a section of AC Milan fans turn on Donnarumma, with a huge banner unfurled at the San Siro on Wednesday night. It read: ‘It’s time to leave – our patience is over.’

Donnarumma was reduced to tears by the incident and speculation he will leave the Serie A giants is again rife.

Yet not only could Donnarumma’s future be affected, but also those of numerous others.

The goalkeeper merry-go-round

Real Madrid are the key reason for these potential ramifications. The Champions League holders have been on the look-out for a new keeper for years but now it seems their patience with Keylor Navas has finally ended. Widespread reports suggest they have made signing a new goalkeeper a priority.

Among those they’ve been most consistently linked with are Manchester United’s David De Gea (who they were on the verge of signing in 2015), Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois and Donnarumma.

These new events could change the landscape with Donnarumma now a more viable option for Real Madrid to sign. Such a scenario would finally end speculation linking the Premier League duo with a move to the Bernabeu.

But there is another scenario. The availability of Donnarumma could see Manchester United or Chelsea line him up as a replacement, allowing De Gea or Courtois respectively to leave for Spain.

Both De Gea and Courtois are out of contract in the summer of 2019, making their futures precarious. Their respective clubs could feel forced to sell if new contracts cannot be agreed before the close of next summer’s transfer window.

There are also suggestions Paris St Germain could become involved in the situation, with current No.1 Alphonse Areola seen as something of a weak link in their star-studded side. If they go out of the Champions League to Real Madrid early next year, expect them to become players in the market.

Which goalkeepers will be involved in summer transfers remains hard to predict, but it’s virtually certain something will give.
