Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is in the frame to replace Antonio Conte at Chelsea, reports say.

Van Gaal has been out of management since being sacked by United in 2016 – the Red Devils subsequently appointed Jose Mourinho on a three-year deal.

Conte has been under immense pressure since the start of 2018 and appeared to be on the brink after Chelsea’s dismal 4-1 defeat against Watford at the start of the month.

The Blues have since won back-to-back Premier League fixtures and held Barcelona to an admirable 1-1 draw in the last-16 of the Champions League on Tuesday.

However, history has shown it takes little to put managers at risk at Stamford Bridge and the board will consider asking Louis van Gaal to step in on an interim basis if Conte leaves, according to the Daily Mirror.

Van Gaal has admitted he has unfinished business in the Premier League after being dismissed by United just days after winning the FA Cup.

It is claimed Van Gaal is only being looked at as a short-term option – the club would make a permanent appointment at the end of the season when the dust settles.

‘I’d be interested in a Premier League club where I’d have the chance to get one over on Manchester United,’ Van Gaal said earlier in the year.
