Mohamed Salah proved he was a genuine class act by apologising to Watford goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis after scoring four times in Saturday’s 5-0 win at Anfield.

The Egypt international forged ahead of the injured Harry Kane in the race for the Premier League’s Golden Boot, scoring twice in each half, and providing the assist for Roberto Firmino’s expertly taken goal.

Salah has now scored 36 goals in all competitions this season, surpassing Fernando Torres’ record for a Liverpool player in their debut season.

Rather than reveling in another stunning achievement, Salah thanked his teammates after the match, but not before embracing and apologising to the hapless Watford keeper, who also conceded to the 25-year-old when Udinese lost 4-0 against Roma back in August 2016.

‘He loves scoring. He’s a fantastic boy to be honest,’ said Salah’s manager Jurgen Klopp after the match.

‘It was very pleasing. It could have been really difficult tonight.

‘We knew we had to be spot on from the first to the last second and our work rate had to be higher than 100%.

‘The goals we scored were unbelievably good, and the boys didn’t stop. That’s how football should be, so I’m really happy with the performance.’
