Trump teases with tweet saying airstrikes could be “very soon or not so soon at all”

Donald Trump is keeping the world on tenterhooks, tweeting that he "never said when an attack on Syria would take place", but suggesting it will come at some point.

The US President, who yesterday pushed up oil prices with his tweet warning Syrian ally Russia that missiles, "will be coming, nice and new and “smart!”

He was slammed for contradicting his own position in 2013, when he criticised Obama for alerting the other side to military plans.

"Why do we keep broadcasting when we are going to attack Syria. Why can't we just be quiet and, if we attack at all, catch them by surprise?" Trump he said at the time.

This morning he said: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place. Could be very soon or not so soon at all! In any event, the United States, under my Administration, has done a great job of ridding the region of ISIS. Where is our “Thank you America?”"

Theresa May has called an emergency meeting of her Cabinet this afternoon to discuss the UK government's response to the chemical attack in Douma, outside Damascus, at the weekend.

So far she has declined to comment on Trumps tweet, but said the use of chemical weapons was a “humanitarian catastrophe” that “cannot go unchallenged”.

The PM said yesterday “all the indications” pointed towards the Syrian regime being behind a “shocking, barbaric act” in the town of Douma. “We are rapidly reaching an understanding of what happened on the ground,” she added.
