UPDATED with more Malibu evacuations lifted, 11:50 AM: The Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department is lifting the fire-evacuation order for more Malibu residents this afternoon, Pepperdine University and some surrounding areas remain closed.
Starting at 2 p.m., residents will be aqllowed to return to the following areas:
- Pacific Coast Highway from Webb Way (east) to the 25700 block of Pacific Coast Highway (east of Corral Canyon)
- From the ocean (south) to the Malibu city limit (north)
Here are the exceptions, per LASD:
- Pepperdine University will remain CLOSED
- Puerco Canyon Road will remain CLOSED, north of the hard gate
- The Corral Canyon Park and the Malibu Beach RV park will also remain CLOSED
- Malibu Canyon Road will be CLOSED north of Civic Center Way
The Sheriffs Department also noted that it will be moving the checkpoint from Pacific Coast Highway and Carbon Canyon Road to PCH and Webb Way in the city of Malibu. Only residents of the repopulated areas west of Webb Way in Malibu will be permitted to enter this area. The area west of Corral Canyon will remain closed.
PREVIOUS UPDATE, November 14: Many folks in Malibu, Calabasas and unincorporated Agoura are being repopulated today. the Woolsey Fire now has blackened nearly 98,000 acres and was 47% contained as of this morning, per Cal Fire.
Malibu locals — other than those in the Malibu Colony neighborhood and Civic Center area — were being allowed to return to their homes starting at 2 PM today in the following areas:
• Pacific Coast Highway from Carbon Canyon Road (east) to Webb Way (west)
• From the ocean to the northern City limit
• Neighborhoods of Serra Retreat and Sweetwater Mesa
LASD noted that deputies will be moving their checkpoint from Pacific Coast Highway and Coastline Road to PCH and Carbon Canyon Road in Malibu. Only residents of the repopulated areas west of Carbon Canyon Road in the City of Malibu will be permitted to enter this area. The area west of Webb Way will remain closed.
The repopulation of Calabasas began at 10 AM today, as the evacuation order was lifted for all residences within the city limits as follows:
• From Mulholland Highway to Eddingham Avenue
• Southeast of Mulholland Highway to the intersection of Summit to Summit Mountainway and Adamsville Avenue
This repopulation effort includes neighborhoods of Calabasas Highlands, Mulholland Heights, and Mountain Park.
Parts of Agoura will be reopened to residents at 4 PM Wednesday. This will include the following areas:
- Kanan Road from Cornell Road (north) to Malibu View Court (south)
- Southeast of Kanan Road to include the Saratoga Hills neighborhood
- Cornell Road from Kanan Road, north of Wagon Road
PREVIOUSLY, November 13: Hours after mandatory evacuations were lifted in Hidden Hills and some surrounding areas, residents of eastern Malibu are being allowed to return to their homes tonight. A long line of cars is clogging Pacific Coast Highway as folks try to get home for the first time in five days.
But its not an invitation for looky-loos: Residents must present an ID to get through. And some evacuation orders remain in place.
The news comes as the massive Woolsey Fire closes in on 100,000 acres burned. Two people are confirmed dead, found Friday in a scorched car on Mulholland Drive in Malibu, and at least 435 structures have been destroyed in the blaze. It broke out Thursday and jumped the 101 Freeway in multiple places. Driven by fierce Santa Ana winds, the flames roared through the canyons east of Malibu before hitting the tony community Friday in an unheard-of mere seven hours.
Officials say the fire is about 35 percent contained, but some mandatory evacuations also remain in force for portions of Calabasas, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills as crews work to battle hotspots and flareups. A red flag warning was extended today through 5 p.m. PT Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Fire Department said tonight that parking restrictions tied to the red flag alert will be lifted at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
