A dozen entertainment industry unions – most of which are affiliated with the AFL-CIOs Department for Professional Employees – have committed to taking joint action to combat sexual harassment in the workplace by sharing training resources, codes of conduct and best practices in order to strengthen their individual efforts.
Reps from nine of the unions – including SAG-AFTRA, Actors Equity, the WGA East, IATSE, the DGA and the American Federation of Musicians – met last week in New York City and pledged to continue working together in this area.
“Creative professionals work side-by-side in shared workplaces, which is why their unions are committed to collaborating on industry-wide improvements,” said DPE president Jennifer Dorning. “DPE affiliate unions representing arts, entertainment, and media professionals are committed to learning from one another in an effort to develop even more effective ways to help eliminate incidents of harassment on the job.”
The coalition of 12 unions, representing half a million industry workers and artists, also includes the American Guild of Musical Artists, the American Guild of Variety Artists, the Guild of Italian American Artists, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Office and Professional Employees International Union, and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.
According to the DPE: “The unions will regularly convene to ensure they live up to their pledge. DPE affiliate unions in arts, entertainment, and media will also continue their foundational work of championing greater systemic equity, diversity, and inclusion in the creative industries.”
In July, the same coalition of unions came together under the umbrella of the DPE to oppose an amendment to a bill then pending in Congress that would have slashed funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities by 15%.
