Limited release newcomers were few over the weekend ahead of the Christmas rollouts, while some higher profile holdovers, including Mary Queen of Scots and The Favourite, continue to get royal treatment from specialty audiences.
Focus Features jumped Mary Queen of Scots to 795 theaters in its third frame, grossing $2.24M for a $2,818 per theater average, landing the title in the overall top 10. Meanwhile, Fox Searchlights The Favourite was just outside that group, playing 790 locations in its fifth outing, grossing $1.9M ($2,405 average).
Amazon Studios opened multi-lingual title Cold War by Polish filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski, who took best director at the Cannes Film Festival and received multiple prizes at the European Film Awards, including Best European Film. The feature grossed $55,727, averaging $18,575.
Annapurna Pictures added just one run for Barry Jenkins If Beale Street Could Talk, grossing $114.902 in five theaters, averaging $22,980, a 58% decline from its opening $54,793 PTA from its initial four runs ($219,173 gross) in its opening weekend.
Cannes Grand Jury prize winner Capernaum went from three to seven runs in its second weekend via Sony Pictures Classics. The film by Nadine Labaki has a three-day estimate of $23,513, averaging $3,359 giving it a cume of $62,070. Lars von Triers The House That Jack Built from IFC Films was much more modest at $10,124 in thirteen locations, though the title starring Matt Dillon is also on-demand.
IFC Films Wildlife by Paul Dano, meanwhile, crossed $1 million in its 10th weekend of release.
Save for what has likely been a robust theatrical run for Alfonso Cuaróns Roma from Netflix, non-English language releases remain a challenge, but there are some glimmers of life. Cold War rolled out with some gusto in three locations from Amazon Studios. Its $18,575 PTA from a three-day estimate of $55,727 actually edged over Magnolias Cannes Palme dOr winner, Shoplifters when comparing averages. Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, the film grossed over $89K in its opening frame in five theaters, averaging $17,853. Shoplifters has cumed over $631K as of Thursday.
Cold Wars average is also on par with Pawlikowskis previous film, Ida, which Music Box Films released stateside in May, 2014. The film grossed $55,438 in three theaters in its opening frame, averaging $18,479. The title went on to cume over $3.82M.
“The movie is a grand romance, and people are responding to that,” said Amazons Bob Berney earlier this week prior to the films bow. “It made sense to open this at the end of the year because it goes right into [the latter part] of awards season.”
The company said the title played to “sold out shows” and was “the best number” at the Laemmle Royal this year. Added the company Sunday: “As were in the long haul, were staying in the same number of theaters next weekend, and will expand into additional locations starting in week three after the holidays.”
Cold War took multiple awards at the European Film Awards and is on the Oscar foreign language short list.
Annapurnas If Beale Street Could Talk played an additional run in its second weekend of release. The company is going more slowly — at least so far — compared to A24, which added nearly three dozen theaters for director Barry Jenkins last film, Moonlight, in its second weekend. Beale Streets second frame, of course, is on the heels of Christmas and New Years holidays. If Beale Street Could Talk grossed $114,902 in five locations, averaging $22,980. The film bowed in four locations last weekend, grossing $224,476, averaging $56,119.
Focus Features added 729 theaters for Mary Queen of Scots, starring Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan in the historical drama about rival monarchs, bringing its total location count to 795 in its third frame. Mary Queen of Scots grossed $2.24M, averaging $2,818, bringing its cume to $3.544M. The weekend prior, Mary Queen of Scots took in just under $700K in 66 locations, averaging $10,602.
Peter Hedges Ben Is Back from LD Entertainment/Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate also had a significant jump in theater count. Starring Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges, the title added 133 runs to bring its theatrical number to 162 Friday. The feature grossed $392K, averaging a slow $2,420 in its third frame, bringing its cume to $711,879.
Searchlights The Favourite is in its fifth weekend of release, though its theatrical count is just below the films royal brethren, Mary Queen of Scots. In 790 theaters, the film by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz grossed an estimated $1.9M Friday to Sunday, averaging $2,405, bringing its cume to over $9.92M. Last weekend, the title grossed $2.6M in 441 locations. The title will easily tread into eight figure territory going into Christmas.
Said Searchlight Sunday: “The film is reaching a broader audience well beyond the art house and cinephile audiences. We are finally seeing some solid traction in mainstream multiplexes as we are now in our national release across North America.” The Favourite will be in over 800 theaters across North America by next weekend.
Already in eight figures, National Geographic Documentary Film/Greenwich Entertainments Free Solo will pass $11M this week. The Oscar shortlisted doc fell just short this weekend, grossing $85,093 in the three-day, averaging $1,165 in 73 theaters, landing at over $10.97M.
