Liverpool have smashed Manchester United’s Champions League record after hammering Spartak Moscow in their final group game on Wednesday evening.

Jurgen Klopp’s side ran out 7-0 winners at Anfield, with Philippe Coutinho bagging a hat-trick, Sadio Mane netting twice, plus Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino also got on the scoresheet.

Liverpool’s comfortable win has meant that they ended Group H with 23 goals scored in just six games – the most any English side has scored in the group stage in Champions League history.

The previous record was set by Manchester United in 1998 when Sir Alex Ferguson’s side scored 20 goals in their group which included Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Brondby.

United went on to win the Champions League that season which completed their historic treble.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, they were unable to break the all-time record for most goals scored in the group stage.

Paris Saint-Germain have set that benchmark this season after scoring 25 goals in their group containing Bayern Munich, Celtic and Anderlecht.
