Manchester United chiefs fear Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be unable to rediscover his top form following his career-threatening injury, reports say.
Ibrahimovic enjoyed a stunning debut season for the Red Devils, scoring 28 goals in 49 appearances and helping the club win the EFL Cup before suffering a horror knee injury in April’s Europa League win over Anderlecht.
There were fears the veteran striker would be forced to retire but he defied medical experts by returning to the field earlier in the season in the Premier League clash against Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
Ibrahimovic has inevitably looked off the pace in his five appearances for United this term but, according to The Sun, there are wider fears about whether he will ever be the same player again.
Jose Mourinho has removed the 36-year-old from his squad twice so he can improve his general fitness and build the muscle surrounding his problematic knee.
And it is claimed the Portuguese boss may look to bolster his attacking options during the January transfer window with fears over Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku’s dip in form.
The Belgium international scored 11 goals in his first ten games for United but appears to have suffered a loss of confidence since mid-October.
