Major package for Kashmir soon: Naqvi

SRINAGAR: Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Tuesday said the Centre would soon announce a massive developmental package for Kashmir Valley and assured that a large chunk of the central scholarship scheme would be given to the students of the newly formed Union Territory of J&K. Naqvi, who is part of a 36-member delegation of Union ministers touring the UT in a major outreach initiative, said this soon after his arrival here.
In the past 70 years, all politicians looted the resources of J&K and played with the emotions of people on some pretext or the other, he said at a function in Harwan on the outskirts of Srinagar.
Naqvi said for the past 70 years, J&K, especially Kashmir, had been the victim of political corruption and governance in the erstwhile state was always hijacked by a particular set of people.
“Nobody can now play with the emotions of people of Kashmir. A transparent system and corruption-free life for the people of Kashmir are on the cards,” Naqvi said, adding that in the coming days, a major developmental package for Kashmir would be announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The scheme will cover all segments, including students.”
Elaborating on the scholarship scheme, the Union minority affairs minister said J&K would get its full share. “We have a plan to cover one crore students across the country under the scholarship scheme and J&K will get a large share out of it. So far we have received 80,000 applications from J&K students. I urge all the children, including those studying in Class I, to submit scholarship forms. In the next five years, we have decided to cover 10 lakh children from J&K alone,” Naqvi said.
Regarding the Haj quota this year, Naqvi said the government would try to accommodate all Haj aspirants from J&K.
