Terrorist killed in Shopian encounter, operation continues

SRINAGAR: A terrorist was killed in an anti-insurgency operation in south Kashmirs Shopian district on Tuesday afternoon. The encounter continued till the time of going to press. Earlier in the day, security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in central Kashmirs Budgam district based on intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area.
The encounter broke out in Melhoora village of Zainpora sub-division after holed-up terrorists fired at a joint team of security forces — comprising personnel from Armys 55 RR and Shopian Police — carrying out a search operation in the area. In the ensuing exchange of fire, one terrorist was killed. Police are yet to ascertain the identity and affiliation of the slain terrorist, officials said.
