Hizb duo killed in Pulwama encounter, gunbattle rages on in Kupwara

SRINAGAR: Two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists were killed in an anti-insurgency operation in Dangerpora area of south Kashmirs Pulwama district early Saturday. Later that afternoon, an encounter broke out in Handwara in north Kashmirs Kupwara district after holed-up terrorists fired upon a team of security forces carrying out a cordon-and-search operation in the area. The firefight continued till the filing of this report.
In the wee hours of Saturday, a joint team of Armys 55 RR, CRPFs 183 and 182 Bn and J&K Polices special operations group launched a cordon-and-search operation in Dangerpora on the basis of intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area.
Seeing the team approach their hideout, holed-up terrorists opened fire at the search party, triggering an encounter in which the duo was killed. The forces destroyed the hideout and recovered their bodies from under the debris, besides a rifle each of AK-47 and INSAS, said a senior police officer. The Hizb duo was identified as Tariq Sheikh and Sahil Abdullah, from Pulwamas Dangerpora and Chakoora areas, respectively.
In a bid to disrupt the operation, a mob of terrorist sympathizers pelted stones at the security forces, in which a constable was wounded while several others sustained minor injuries in the clashes that ensued. The protestors were later dispersed by cops.
