‘Amphan’ may bring first flood of year in Assam: CWC

GUWAHATI: The Central Water Commission has warned of flood due to “likelihood of rapid rise in water levels” in several rivers of western parts of Assam due to rainfall activated by super cyclonic storm Amphan (pronounced as UM-PUN) from May 21 onwards.
The commission also has forecast that main Brahmaputra river may also rise slowly but “there may be above normal flood only around Jorhat district.
In its flood advisory for Assam, the CWC bulletin says, “Due to the rainfall forecast, there is likelihood of rapid rise in water Levels in the sub-basins of Sankosh, Gaurang, Champamati, Aie, Manas, Beki, Pagladiya, Puthimari and Jia-Bharali in the districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Dhubri, Baksa, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Kamrup Rural and Sonitpur.”
“As per the forecast, rainfall is confined to the western portions of Assam, not much flow is expected in various hydro-electric projects located in Kopili, Dhansiri (S) and Subansiri. However, the project authorities may keep continuous vigil in case of any sudden change in direction of movement of storm,” the CWC advisory states.
The CWC has pointed out that Amphan over west-central Bay of Bengal moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 15 kmph and lay centred at 8.30 am May 19 near latitude 16.0°N and longitude 86.8°E over west-central Bay of Bengal, about 480 km nearly south of Paradip (Odisha), 630 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 750 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).
