Covid-19: New cases rise to 6,378; days toll 144

NEW DELHI: India reported 6,378 new Covid-19 infections on Saturday, the highest single-day jump in cases so far. This was the fifth peak in daily cases in as many days, taking the countrys total coronavirus count to just short of the 1.3 lakh mark, barely five days after the caseload crossed 1 lakh.
India has so far reported 1,29,539 Covid cases, as per data from state governments. The days death toll was reported at 144, the seventh straight day when more than 130 people have succumbed to the infection, taking the total toll to 3,870.
The surge in cases on Saturday came even as Maharashtra reported a slight dip in numbers at 2,608, down from 2,940 on Friday. Several states that arent among the worst-hit reported a record surge, including Karnataka (216) and Uttarakhand (92).
At the same time, the numbers remained high in Tamil Nadu (759 new cases), Delhi (591), Madhya Pradesh (282, including 75 from Indore reported around midnight), Rajasthan (248), UP (282) and Bihar (228).
As many as 27 states reported corona cases during the day, an indication of the spread of the virus in the country. These included the first Covid positive case detected in Sikkim, the only state/UT that had remained free of the virus so far.
