NEW DELHI: Solicitor general Tushar Mehta on Wednesday refused permission to one Usha Shetty to file a petition in the Supreme Court seeking initiation of contempt of court proceedings against actor Swara Bhasker for her alleged derogatory comments against the SC on the Ayodhya land dispute verdict.
The SG took exception to Shettys attempt to seek his consent after attorney general K K Venugopal had declined it. “Considering the fact that the AG has already declined to grant his consent in the matter…, the present request made to me is misconceived,” Mehta said in response to a letter from Shettys counsel Anuj Saxena.
Under the Contempt of Court Act, 1971, consent of the AG or the SG is needed to initiate contempt proceedings against anyone. Venugopal had refused consent for filing a contempt petition against Bhasker and had told TOI, “I declined consent as there is no attack on the Supreme Court. It is mere innuendo. Initiating contempt proceedings would mean giving more credence to her statement, which is not needed”.
