MUMBAI: The picture and video of a protester at the Gateway of India holding up a poster that read "Free Kashmir" went viral on Monday evening, drawing sharp reactions from BJP and from many others who claimed the protests in support of JNU had been infiltrated by those with other divisive agendas.
The woman holding the poster was 37-year-old Mehak Mirza Prabhu, a Mumbai-based storyteller, writer and performer. She crafts short fictional stories and performs frequently and known in the performance arts space. One of her closest creative partners is Mohammed Muneem, a Kashmiri singer-songwriter living in Mumbai whose songs and poems are mostly rooted in the valley. When mediapersons asked her about her choice of slogan, she said she wasn't from Kashmir but "wants freedom for everyone." On Twitter, #FreeKashmir had garnered over 31,000 mentions till the time of going to press.
