UAE Embassy warns travellers in Thailand

Dubai: The UAE Embassy in Thailand has issued a warning to Emiratis in Phuket after local authorities announced a storm alert.

“The UAE Embassy in Bangkok warned its citizens in Phuket to avoid the sea from August 9 to 15, and to follow instructions from Thai authorities,” said the embassy.

Strong wind and waves are expected to reach two to three meters high in the Andaman Sea, according to Phukets English newspaper the Phuket News.

Weather forecasters also predicted waves about two meters high in the upper Gulf and above three meters high in thundershower areas.

“Outbreaks of more rain, as well as isolated heavy downpour, will be expected over the country. People should beware of severe condition,” announced the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).

On Wednesday, the Phuket Marine Office banned all small boats less than 12 metres long from travelling to nearby islands, and Phi Phi Island, until next Wednesday August 15.
