UN envoy in Riyadh to meet Yemeni govt officials

The United Nations Yemen envoy is in Riyadh on Monday as part of efforts to convene December peace talks between Houthis and the legitimate government in Yemen.

Martin Griffiths visit should come as fighting eases around the Houthi-held port city of Hodeidah, however, sources confirmed that Houthi militias have taken advantage of a truce in Hodeidah and sent reinforcements to push further into the strategic Yemeni city..

Fighting had intensified in early November as coalition-backed Yemeni forces attempted to enter Hodeidah, but calm returned after Griffiths arrived in Yemen on Wednesday.

The UN said the envoy, who also visited Hodeidah last week to assess the humanitarian situation, is due to hold talks with Yemens internationally recognized government in Riyadh on Monday.

Military officials quoted by the state-run Saba news agency on Sunday evening said the Yemeni army foiled a Houthi “infiltration attempt” into a camp in Hays province, about 100 Kilometers south of Hodeidah.

Pro-government military officials told AFP Monday that pro-government forces operations in the east and south of the Red Sea city had been suspended.
