JEDDAH: A one-and-a-half-year-old child has been given a brighter future thanks to the pioneering efforts of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department of King Saud Medical City in Riyadh. In what is considered a remarkable achievement, it successfully created prostheses for the child, who lost both lower legs in a traffic accident.
“During the first visit, our medical team assessed his condition to see whether it was possible to manufacture prosthetic limbs, especially due to the young age of the patient, who needed attention and different types of artificial limbs,” said Mansour Al-Suwaiheb, head of the rehabilitation techniques department at KSMC.
During subsequent visits, limb measurements were taken so that prostheses could be designed and manufactured, and they were fitted to see how well they allowed the youngster to stand and walk.
Because the child, from Tabuk region, is so young and growing rapidly, Al-Suwaiheb said that he will need to be fitted with new artificial limbs every six months.
“The patient could not stand or walk after the accident, but now he can stand on both feet,” said Al-Suwaiheb. “His condition is constantly improving thanks to the rehabilitation process and continuous follow-up.”
